Now I know the world is coming to an end

.
As the world just gets stranger and stranger, I try to take things in stride, though it’s not always easy. I’ve sort of learned to live with polar ice caps melting, drug resistant germs proliferating, teenagers texting while driving, Katie Couric anchoring the evening news, uncontrollable forest fires, relentless hurricanes, the almost daily appearance of new exercise machines, the knowledge that monkeys recently killed a politician in India, Britney Spears, American Idol being called quality television, George Bush being president, people buying anything written by Ann Coulter, botox, Pluto being humiliated, temperatures rising, Hillary Clinton’s lead in the polls, Dick Cheney having avoided being thrown in jail, Barry Bonds having avoided being thrown in jail, Nancy Grace having her own cable show, Paul Bremer receiving the Medal of Freedom, tsunamis, disappearing coastlines and microwavable Hamburger Helper.

But now I know the world is coming to end after reading about the latest trend in prison reform -- the beauty pageant.

Don’t believe me; then follow the link at the end of this entry.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you check out my next post.

Michael Welch: The "End" Can Be "At Hand"... wrote on Oct 26, 2007 12:00 PM:

" My friend 'Bugs' sent me prolific biblical scholar Jonathan Kirsch's 'History of the End of the World,' a study of that problematic horror story supreme 'the book of Revelation,' last in the Christian 'testament.' Kirsch reminds us that ever since the Maccabean times of 'Daniel' that we've been promised an end but even Jesus was wrong! It took Einstein and the US 'Manhatten project' to make apocalypse now! actually possible and so the world CAN literally come to its 'final days' in a series of explosions or more slowly it seems in gradual climactic decay. How 'bout that?! We FINALLY can make all those unrealized predictions true! Make ya feel better?!... "

" Jimmy's list got me to thinkin' not so much about the end of the world, but the end of democracy, such as it is, in the US: Bush steals the 2000 election; Cheney engineers the 9/11 attacks; the 9/11 Commission covers it up; the media looks the other way; Bush illegally invades Iraq; the Downing Street memo shows he deceived the people to go to war; the Democrats yawn over this impeachable offense; Bush steals the 2004 election; the media looks the other way; then there's Katrina, torture, Gonzalez, and soon the attack on Iran which the Democrats will do nothing to stop. I call it Orwell's America. "

" It's interesting that at approximately 1:50 pm CDT the Trib poll re: Bush as prez 'grades' him thusly: 79 A's; 132 B's; 116 C's; 146 D's -- and 446 F's! (With 58 'Incompletes'; perhaps the 'fairest' grade albeit not MY assessment of course!) This has been a pretty lousy president all in all; it'll take all the Trumanesque horses and all the Trumanesque men to put Humpty W up on the wall again, historically. And by the way I can tell ya that the only time folks started 'liking' Truman again was when Nixon was president. Geez I hope there's NEVER a time we sink so low that W's rep rises thus... "

Michael Welch: World War "Last"?... wrote on Oct 24, 2007 11:48 AM:

" 'Past performance is not etc.'? Well 'judge not lest ye be judged' but every time something 'new' is revealed about the present administration it's more awful than the previous revelation. Nixon was at least competently 'evil'; Reagan was obliviously 'evil'; W is merely the stooge for 'evil' -- as if Fu Manchu were standing behind Moe, Larry & Curly. I don't believe the US is at all prepared to handle any attack on Iran and therefore and thereafter a middle east-wide war but then it was SO dismally 'prepared' to occupy Iraq! Who knows what fools will do indeed?!... "

Bugs Raplin wrote on Oct 24, 2007 8:15 AM:

" Well, I hope it is Israel that does it, because the only way an American attack on Iran could be "sold" to the citizenry (bewildered herd) is if it is preceded by another "9/11" conveniently blamed on the Iranians. In the hysteria following the "Iranian" attack on the US, hardly a soul in Congress would object and the draft would be re-instated without so much as a whimper, thereby solving the manpower shortage in Iraq and Afghanistan. The media, of course, will go along. They always do. "

" Hey, Big Spender...but seriously...you are doing a bang-up job; your posts on local issues where taxes are involved have been great; keep it up. Also, nice to have you on Jimmy's blog; it's not exactly a "happenin" place to be, so the more the merrier. "

" Michael, Past performance is not indicative of future results. "

Big Spender wrote on Oct 24, 2007 6:05 AM:

" "The world is coming to an end?" You say that as if it were a bad thing. (If a really big asteroid hits, there might be some short-term discomfort, but think of all the long-term world misery thus circumvented.) "

Michael Welch: Misery's Company... wrote on Oct 23, 2007 12:58 PM:

" Unfortunately the world never 'comes to an end' no matter how often promised but only seeks newer avenues of destruction -- I suppose even the United States can survive THIS awful present presidency and so yes Hillary would probably be a 'relief' -- one hopes -- with some more 'chump change' for SCHIP and another 'stab' at a semblance of national health care the Clintons ever fear MIGHT resemble a single-payer plan and therefore actually do more than wrap a few wounds. I agree with 'Bugs' that SOMEONE is going to bomb Iran but I think it will be the Israelis; in the meantime SOMEONE IS going to attack the Kurds -- the shi'ite Iraqi government/militias? the Turkish army? or the Americans?!! World without end! -- oh man!... "

" Beauty pageants? Those Russian babes looked more like drag queens in need of dental care. I much prefer jail inmates to wear stripes and ankle chains. "

" You left out the coming attack on Iran. "
