Biggest meet of all awaits

.
Feb. 28--Hello again wrestling fans,

As most of you know, we are in our final 2 weeks of competition. The only meet left is the greatest of them all — the national tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

This past Sunday was our national qualifier and conference tournament hosted by Lawrence University in Appleton. It was a great tourney. Aside from the long breaks after each round, the tournament went very smoothly overall. The whole day was a lot of fun! Our team was very ready to compete this weekend — you could just feel it. We have prepared all year long for this past weekend and the upcoming weekend and it is paying off. We have done all the right things all year long and it is proving itself on the mat.

Some may ask why Stevens Point was ahead of us going into the final round. Well, they too were wrestling well. We also didn’t get much help from the rest of the conference. If other teams had won more against Stevens Point, they would have been farther behind. But that is ok because we were prepared much better than they were. It showed during the finals. We had eight guys in the finals and won seven of those eight matches. Stevens Point had seven guys in the finals and only won one of them. We have been prepared to wrestle full matches and full tournaments.

This year's conference tournament was the most fun I’ve had at a conference tournament in my career. Something about having Stevens Point ahead of us going into the finals and then blowing them out — that is fun! We had some big wins by our young guys. Brandon Music at 125 had a huge win to really get our team going. He ignited all of us and got us rolling in the finals. Another huge win was at 149 with Matt Mauseth beating a returning All-American and past conference champion. Heavyweight Dan Laurent also avenged some losses in the conference and won it for himself. It was all a great day and we went home happy with what we had done.

Our training is also tapering back. Our practices have become shorter and more focused. We are doing the necessary things to prepare ourselves for the national tournament next weekend. Like I said last time I blogged, we are fine-tuning our skills to make ourselves more error free. There is always room for improvement and we are always continuing to improve. Our guys are feeling fresh and ready to go. The morale in the wrestling room is very high. We only have eight guys still competing, but if you came to our practices, you would see nearly all 30 of our rostered wrestlers. We are a team and everyone knows that it will take all of us to be the best in the nation. Everyone is on the same page and committed to making UW-La Crosse the best team in the nation!

Well, we have a great opportunity in front of us and we are ready to capitalize! I’m really excited and hope I have some great news for you in the following weeks! Until then, be safe and think SPRING!!

Yours in Wrestling,

JOSH

JOSH
