What’s the all time NC-17 box office champ?

.
Americans love rankings, in great part because of our fascination with winners and losers. For an American, there’s nothing better than becoming the champ, or seeing that champ dethroned by the underdog.

It’s no different with movies, where opening weekends and weekly box-office takes are regularly reported; a kind of cinematic horse race. It’s fun to follow, with the rankings a reflection of our cultural pulse.

What, for instance, is the highest grossing NC-17 film of all time? It’s an interesting question, and the fact that many movie loving Americans would find it interesting is of interest itself! For that matter, what are the highest grossing G, PG, PG-13 and R-rated films? And of course, what’s the highest grossing film of all time, and does it retain that ranking when the box-office take is adjusted for inflation?

Test your movie knowledge and powers of deduction by writing down your answers before looking them up.

" Yes, I agree. Showgirls was great. "

" is probably the best NC17 show of all times. The scenery was great, the storyline was compelling, and I loved the Costumery. "

" I agree with Johnny Hobo, though I hope his thoughts aren't dictated by his being a reprobate. I would have guessed that Last Tango in Paris ranked importantly, though not high. But what strikes me as most intersting in this realm of discussion is that once it became possible to show both blood and sex, the sex was self-censored and the blood turned into a flood. "

" Jimbo, the larger problem here, IMHO, is Hollywood's lack of "cajones" when it comes to releasing NC-17 movies. Instead of forcing directors like Kubrick, Scorsese and DePalma to chop, edit or electronically alter their movies to fit the "acceptable" R rating, the studios need to put faith in the American public to decide for themselves if they are interested and mature enough to watch a NC-17 flick. Given how "special unrated" DVDs sell and rent, you would think that the studios would get a clue. Then again, this was the industry that took 60 years to have inter-racial love scenes...and those are still "controversial." "

Michael Welch Musings Re Mel Gibson... wrote on Jun 17, 2008 12:26 PM:

" 'Passion of the Christ' is the 'See "them" (the ol' bad Romans and -- sigh! -- the Jews of course) beat the living s--- outta Jesus!' You know I've really liked the Melster in some films, especially the excellent 'Year of Living Dangerously' and he makes a fine, humane, conscientious but too emotional 'Fletcher Christian' in 'The Bounty,' the most accurate film depiction of the infamous mutiny so far. But 'Passion' seems just obsessive as if it were the equivalent of Mel drunk and ranting about Jews as the source of all his troubles. I didn't like 'Braveheart' by the way -- too exalted a modernization of 'freedom' when Wallace was more about Scottish resistance than a universal paean. Yet Mel's undoubtedly a VERY talented man... "

To Question from Jimmy wrote on Jun 17, 2008 12:17 PM:

" Very good, most impressive! You are correct, "A Clockwork Orange" was, in fact, originally rated X (as was "Midnight Cowboy"). Both films were later changed to R, which speaks volumes about what direction the movie business has moved. "

R Rated Movies wrote on Jun 17, 2008 11:55 AM:

" So, "The Passion of the Christ" was the number one r rated movie of all time-worldwide? Wow. That is a far cry from the amusing article in the faith section(and follow up letter today)regarding a freethinkers group that essentialy says "We are freethinkers. Please join our group-as long as you think as we do." On one hand, you have a group of misfits meeting in someones basement(someone check the zoning ordinances). On the other hand, you have the #1 worlwide grossing r-rated movie of all time. "

Question... wrote on Jun 17, 2008 11:22 AM:

" Would NC-17 include the "X" rated movies of the past? If so, I would have to say "A Clockwork Orange". How close am I? "
