Study says Americans having less sex. No wonder we’re cranky

.
On average, Americans spend about three hours every week on grooming compared to a mere 57 minutes on sex (I suppose “mere” is a matter of age and perspective; to many graying baby boomers, 57 minutes probably sounds pretty good!). That’s one of the findings in the Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey released this past December.

The survey also concluded that “Americans are having a lot less sex than practically everyone else in the world, and when they do, less than half are fully satisfied.” Of the developed nations, only the Japanese are having less sex than Americans, a paltry average of 48 times per year compared to 85 in the good old USA.

A majority of Americans say the number one reason for having less satisfactory sex less often is stress, with a lack of romance most frequently sighted as the second reason (I could venture a guess at a few more reasons, but, hey, this is a PG-13 Rated blog).

Michael Welch Salome As Teen Queen... wrote on Jul 25, 2008 11:33 AM:

" We've degenerated everywhere apparently -- and it's not even past convention time! This WILL be one of the nastiest and dirtiest presidential campaigns no doubt, worse than 2000 and '04 obviously. And I, like Harsch, like reading the Bible; I started as a child but became rather bored in Sunday school because we got the expurgated version; that's why I ALWAYS prefer Hollywood. A la a Jimmy 'contest' I purpose Who is the 'best' Salome in the movie versions of Jesus uncensored? I 'vote' for two: Brigid Bazlen as the whacked out teen sl-t in Nick Ray's quirky but quite fine 1961 'King of Kings' -- Ray grew up in lovely lively by the way, a friendly acquaintance of my father at Central High. And then there's the horse faced lanky virgin in Pasolini's VERY LITERAL 'Gospel According to St Matthew'... "

" I don't like to look down on other people's pleasure, but I do enjoy looking IN on them in my own spare time from my own sex life. For the bonobo voyeurism is not even a word, for they consider their sex so normal as not to need privacy. Largely bonobo myself in a human world I must sneak my peeks. "

" You really are an evil person. You should get a life. Maybe you could join Rush Limbaugh on one of his Caribbean sex outings. I hear he likes the little boys down there. But that's probably because no women want him anymore. Just ask his ex wives. "

Barack Hussein Obama wrote on Jul 24, 2008 4:31 PM:

" Mr. Harsch, you shouldn't look down on other people's pleasures. Who are you to judge another person's culture and determine what is abuse of women? Remember, vote for change, and free America of it's prejudices of other cultures. Praise Allah. "

harsch wrote on Jul 24, 2008 3:08 PM:

" I don't see anything wrong with porn, soft or, pardon, hard. The Bible, though, as Welch says, has extraordinarily explicit scenes, some of which I would rather not watch on television. Nudity, wild lovemaking, fine. But the really nasty stuff, the abuse of women...not so much fun. "

Gee to Michael wrote on Jul 24, 2008 2:41 PM:

" The Bible has real life drama with real life messups, and it tells what happens, but soft core porn? Not hardly. With your definition of soft core porn, any drama on TV or in the theaters (PG or not) would be soft core porn. "

Michael Welch Lots Of Sex And Sin -- Almost The Bible By De Mille... wrote on Jul 24, 2008 11:36 AM:

" The Bible is rife with sex stories; no I didn't imagine them; they are there in words in black and white on those very thin pages edged with gold gloss. I don't disparage their frequent mention but e. g., David doesn't 'procure' Bathsheba for initially 'procreative' purposes nor the rest of his harem nor does Solomon his for that matter. Heirs must be produced however and it is striking that the heir to David is a son BY Bathsheba whom he has 'taken in adultery' and then had her husband set up for military murder so he could legally marry her. Sex, violence and murder -- and the king escapes with of course only the child born before Solomon dead. That's a made for Hollywood story (and it was!) and right from the Bible! (By the way my 'image verification' is 'titcw' -- I kid you not!...) "

" Look at this idiocy: 'Western Europe(Britian, France etc) has even less children than us - hence less sex.' Although it is awful nice of 'Yo' to tell us what he means by Western [sic] Europe, his statement is bizarre. Europeans have a great deal more sex than Americans--fewer babies means such things as condoms and a more realistic approach to religion in daily life. "

" This is OLD news. If you read America Alone, the end of the world as we know it - Steyn, he pointed out the real harm this could do. Western Europe(Britian, France etc) has even less children than us - hence less sex. Ben Franklin told Europe that the USA would "out-birth" them and that this litterally "NEW" nation would outlast them in the long run. Be Patriotic and just do it, for the survival of your nation depends upon it. "

To gross wrote on Jul 23, 2008 9:28 PM:

Gee to andy wrote on Jul 23, 2008 2:33 PM:

" You are partly right and mainly wrong. I said sex is primarily for procreation. I didn't say it was ONLY for procreation. God made sex PRIMARILY for making children, but He made it fun for our enjoyment also. Sex is best inside a Godly marriage where procreation goes hand in hand with personal enjoyment. Do we need to control or 'repress' as you say, some urges (sexual or whatever)? Absolutely. Otherwise Pettibone beach would be overrun with college orgies. "

Gee wrote on Jul 23, 2008 1:34 PM:

" Michael reminds me of a joke. A therapist is doing an ink blot test and asks his patient what he sees and every time a different blot comes up, the patient says something to do with sex. After about 20 ink blots and 20 sex responses the therapist tells the patient that he is obsessed with sex. The patient responds, "ME! It's you that has all of the dirty pictures!"

The Bible isn't soft porn, but if you have a preconcieved perception of what you think the Bible is, you just might look for excuses for your porn addiction. "

Bill Clinton wrote on Jul 23, 2008 1:11 PM:

" I don't think Gee is being sarcastic. There are plenty of people who claim to endorse sex only as a means of procreation. The problem is that they are attempting to suppress natural human emotions and desires. They inevitably end up with their pants at their ankles in an airport men's room seeking anonymous encounters "

" Apparently the great Greek writer Aristophanes noted that, at last, at 80 he no longer felt any sexual desire and what a relief! Re: the 'procreative' sex only comment below -- is it satire or is it Memorex? Is it 'merely,' per Jimmy, provocative? The Bible of course is rife with sexuality -- it was the first soft core porn I ever read, once one comprehended what the euphemistic connotation of 'to know' meant. Check out the story of Dinah in Genesis for some hearty rape-sex and kinky violence plus see Judah and 'the harlot by the road.' Note how Abraham TWICE trades off his sister-wife Sarah for goods. Jesus seems more uh 'Aristophanean' only at a far younger age; when the mob eagerly brings him a harlot to stone he sighs MUST WE?!... "

Gee wrote on Jul 23, 2008 9:34 AM:

" I hope the government funded this important study!

Sex is primarily for creating children. Secular humanism has taught people that sex is for personal pleasure. Sex is great, but the fun is short lived. Do something meaningful with sex, like having children and raising a family, and you learn what real longterm joy is. I wish I would have had more children. The joy that they bring is much greater then the short term pleasure of sex. "
