Poland is right to want deployment of U.S. missile defense systems

.
Anyone who has undertaken even a cursory study of 20th century European history should be able to understand why the people of Poland do not trust the Russian Federation, merely the latest incarnation of the Soviet Union. In fact, it’s obvious why none of the Eastern European countries and former Soviet satellites trust the Russians, as recent events in Georgia have once again made painfully clear.

Then there’s the issue of Iran, which, along with Saudi Arabia, is one of the Middle-East’s two most dangerous countries, and whose government is decidedly anti-American and anti-Israel. There’s no question that, sooner or later, Iran will become a nuclear power (I’m not sure Israeli defense forces can stop them this time), raising the stakes in the already volatile region.

Lastly, while it remains unlikely that terrorist groups will acquire missile technology or missile systems of their own, the presence of American missile batteries in Poland will provide an additional layer of deterrent and added security for Poland and the U.S.

Michael Welch Barack Sidney McBama... wrote on Aug 25, 2008 11:56 AM:

" Look I don't care about the quote and neither do you really. ALL candidates say this stuff (they're tired; it's a 20 hour a day 'job') -- e. g. Mac, snapping off the $5 million bucks makes you 'rich' joke ($4,999,999.99 makes you what? upper middle class?) and gee I'll get back to you about where the hell it is I live sometimes or plumping (in a wistful moment?) the idea that he'd take a pro-choicer like Tom Ridge as vice, is gaffe ridden too and ripe for ridicule. Don't YOU agree? Still you're (I assume) voting for Mac because I dunno Obama is the anti-Christ or the end of 'our way of life'? Obama is MUCH MORE LIKE McCain AND everybody else in US politics OR he could NEVER even have the opportunity to become president. THAT's 'the system' as is, since 1963... "

To Michael wrote on Aug 25, 2008 8:51 AM:

" Okay, here is your answer. No one is saying people shouldn't want change. But the quote attributed to Obama was an exact quote. You really don't think he could have worded it differently or explained himself more? "

Michael Welch Is Simple A Simpleton.. wrote on Aug 23, 2008 11:39 AM:

" Obviously the quotist below has convinced himself -- that must have been difficult! -- but he has not convvinced me of anything. As I wrote on the latest blog -- Is there NOTHING in the US YOU wish to change? Do YOU consider the US 'the greatest' and therefore absolutely 'perfect'? Therefore you wouldn't want Roe v Wade repealed or a 'human life amendment' passed or formal Christian prayer in public schools restored? You want to 'change' nothing at all? Or am I being uh TOO 'simple'?... "

Izzy Fabin wrote on Aug 22, 2008 3:53 PM:

" Sometimes, candidates make it easy for their opponents. In Obamas case, no critical examination is necessary. His own quotes say all there is to say. "My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. Please join with me as we try to change it." And, this gem: "I will tax you into prosperity." That is all. "

Michael Welch WAR IS EXPANDING Not Narrowing -- Look Out India... wrote on Aug 22, 2008 11:55 AM:

" Re: the RELEVANT 'Kali' comment I again say what I've said before -- the WARS are expanding, with India by the way joining in US military exercises. (Hear that giant sucking sound, Indians? It's YOU into the wars.) NEITHER Obama NOR McCain are proposing anything but a SHIFT from the Iraq war to the Afghan one. (Yesterday the US and Iraq agreed in principle to a, yes a 'timetable' -- US troops out BY the END of 2011. I predict: most will be out by summer of '10 NO MATTER if Obama OR McCain is prez.) NO rightie ditey commenting here has EVER alluded to Obama's 'shift' -- why? Can't fit it into the procrustean bed of your ideological fantasies? Some righty -- comment please on Obama's 'shift'... "

" From my perspective in India, a country in a 'cold war' with Pakistan, I believe it is very important to examine political reality as objectively as possible. I remember when I was in college, a history professor in La Crosse reminded us that communism was not monolithic. Nor is Islam. And I agree with Mr. Bowers that from all evidence, the real aggressor in the ME is not Iran. The U.S. and Israel have been far more belligerant than any other nations. And in Afghanistan we know from history that invaders go there to die. Who has Afghanistan ever attacked? I wish deeply that neither India nor Pakistan had nuclear weapons, and I believe probably that the Poles for the most part would also like to avoid the nuclear brinkmanship the U.S. seems determined to engage in. "

Cagefighter to harsch cont wrote on Aug 22, 2008 8:43 AM:

" As to your comments, I do seem to remember something in the past about Welch and public computers. For you to bring that up out of the blue for no apparent reason was pure idiocy. Same with you calling people xenophobes. No purpose accept to enflame, added nothing to discussion, etc. All that notwithstanding, I wanted to just put all the silliness aside and try to have what Michael has been begging for-an actual discussion. But, you ham-n-eggers just keep pulling me back in to the idiocy! When purposelly baited, I do have a hard time ignoring...but I have tried to stop responding in kind. "

Cagefighter to Harsch wrote on Aug 22, 2008 8:34 AM:

" You are entitled to your opinion(sorry-I know how you hate that phrase), but you have me all wrong. I know I can't prove that to you, as we form impressions of other posters usually with very limited information. "

Harsch to Cagefighter wrote on Aug 21, 2008 6:44 PM:

" You are a true pizda. Absolutely nothing you write is honest nor does it suggest you understand anything. I think you know this, but I can't be sure, for I cannot discern the motive for being such a pizda. Demanding an answer you well know was a relatively recent absurdity aimed at Welch, and i combined it with the older absurdity of the 'accusations' regarding Welch's computer use. You know this, I believe, but then you are the poster who proudly parades your parading in front of astonished friends--presumably utterly amazed at your magnificent physique--and who fecklessly baits Smith about wrestling 20 years ago. Satire you probably understand as a word, but you lack the honesty to recognize it when used by someone you oppose. I truly believe you are a sociopath, and I hope you have yourself under control somehow. "

Cagefighter to Michael wrote on Aug 21, 2008 12:19 PM:

" Actually, I didn't apologize. I was living by the "eye for an eye" rule re Harsch and Smith. I simply stated I thought they have been beat up enough, and I will play nice if they will. So far, Harsch pretty much has(with a minor slip up) and there has been nary a peep from Smith. So, I fully intend to keep my promise. Also, I assure you I wasn't trying to make you my stick. Harschs ridiculous demand for an answer to a ridiculous query was my stick. And it would have been no matter who he asked it of. "

Michael Welch World Wide War In The Works... wrote on Aug 21, 2008 11:41 AM:

" The Iranians are sore besieged; they are between uh 'Iraq and a hard place,' now a 'HOT place,' Afghanistan, and it's moving farther east into Pakistan. Yes the WARS are spreading into an unstable nuclear power that by the way likely provided Iran with much of its nuke technology. BOTH McCain and Obama have stated REPEATEDLY that they intend to 'intensify' the Afghan war; Obama on his recent 'world tour' was actively RECRUITING the Germans to send MORE troops. The US is destabilizing central Asia and the trans Caucasus for 'oily' purpose and the Russians are responding by attempting to STABILIZE their southern Caucasus 'flank.' For every action there IS a corresponding reaction eh... "

Michael Welch Leave Me Out And I Leave You Out... wrote on Aug 21, 2008 11:32 AM:

" As for desires for decorous behaviors, leave my name out if you wish me to avoid mentioning yours; I'm not your stick with which to beat Harsch. If you claim you're GOING to be 'good,' well BE good and stop merely promising. Your mother wants you to apologize; I want you to stop having something to apologize for. Jab me and I jab back; live your 'promises' and I have no further complaints. 'Eye for eye' is YOUR RULE, LONG established on this blog; I only obey... "

" When our president claimed to see into Putin's soul, I wondered what horror could result. Since The Fall, initiated, essentially, by the breathtakingly bold Gorby, we have sat idly by as the Soviet state was ruthlessly parted out to oligarchs and mafia dons with billionaires blooming like maggots on the carcass of the state--all quite to the liking of global concerns quite willing to share in the spoils without including the long-suffering Russian people. What happens when empires descend into this mire? See Bush-Cheney. For would-be empires? See Amidineijad and the Mullahs. "

Harsch...regarding Georgia wrote on Aug 20, 2008 1:55 PM:

" Abkhazia, especially, and S. Ossetia, are not 'by nature' Georgian. They were part of the 'Gerogian region' of the USSR, but come the breakup they did not want to exist under Georgian hegemony. Georgian force was necessary to deny the will of the Abkhazian and S. Ossetian people. Alliance with Russian is an obvious expedient for the Abkhazians and S.Ossetians. Gerogian troop went into the capitol of S. Ossetia and killed about 2000 civilians (it took years for Iraqis to kill that many Americans), by means such as tossing hand grenades into cellars. I think it is very important to understand these situations outside of something like a de facto cold war perspective. "

Harsch...Hello wrote on Aug 20, 2008 1:50 PM:

" My Polish friend, Jacek, called me in October, 2001, and said 'Rick, why you are attacking Kabul?' I said, 'I'm not, I'm here in Slovenia. The point is that he immediately saw the absurdity of that choice. And the Polish common man will see the absurdity of this one. They know that they attacked Moscow long before Moscow attacked them, but that, as Welch says, the days of such attacks are at an end if there is no external provocation. The U.S. making Poland a battleground again is obscene. Just as the U.S. would not tolerate missiles in Cuba, the Russians won't in Poland. The move is utterly irresponsible. "

" Okay, Michael, you ask everyone to grow up and stop with the pettiness on the other blogs(I actually beat you to it on this blog). But then you attack me here for no reason, as SSM pointed out. I will take the high road since no one else, including you, seems capable of doing so. I will just offer a suggestion I made on the other blog: If you and Harsch wish to enjoy your own private jokes and humor that no one else is allowed to comment on for fear of an uproar, why not email each other privately? "

Slick Skillet Mayhand wrote on Aug 20, 2008 1:24 PM:

" What is going on here? Michael, Cagefighter was defending you! You may say "no thanks", but why all the hostility? He was willing to let things go with Harsch and Smith but, no, you have to keep at it. Whoever alleged evidence of xenophobia is a lack of response to a post is who you should be accusing of lack of brain power. Cagefighter may be abrasive, but he is fair. I know you guys don't see eye to eye, but when you were wronged, he took up your cause. "

" The key word here is DEFENSE. We offered the very same technology to Russia if they would have signed on to a zero count on scuds in Iceland. Gorby said no, Ronnie said - ok, Gorby said - stop deploying "star wars", Ronnie said - Go to zero and I'll share what I have with you - Gorby said Goodbye. Now they want to have "the ability" to a quick takeover of a friendly state to the U.S.A. - I'd say NO! I know McCain will say no as well, Obama will attempt to take it to the security council - oops, Russia is on the council! "

Michael Welch Iran Is Howdy Doodys Mister Bluster... wrote on Aug 20, 2008 11:30 AM:

" Iran's current public relations 'problem' is that it is represented internationally by a loud mouth like unto 'Cagefighter,' i. e. a mindless provocateur who shifts continually from feigned innocence to deliberate antagonism. Unlike this 'Cf' creature however, talking tough and foolishly has an objective beyond a nasty adolescent's self amusement; it is really a substitute for lack of power (re: 'Cagefighter' -- his substutute for lack of brains?). The Iranians have a large nation with enough resources to maintain their independence but they are vulnerable to the massive technological power of the US and Israel. They fuss and fume as per the north Koreans BECAUSE they haven't the strength, not because they do... "

Michael Welch Map Reading One O One... wrote on Aug 20, 2008 11:20 AM:

" I'm not certain this is such a good idea; I doubt very much the Russians especially contemplate 'invading' Poland again -- the precedent of September 1939 not being a fortuitous one in the long run -- and the Putin government will see the missiles for what they are really, an immediate 'answer' to the Georgian war and in the larger sense a move toward classic 'encirclement' of Russia. Iran is going to zap Poland yeah sure; why? The virgin Mary lives there? (No Jews anymore that's for sure.) This is deep absurdity and the Russkis are brutal, not 'stupid,' after all. Iran, bracketed by countries with US occupation forces, has a la 'Bowers' far more reason for wariness. Just look at the map boys and girls... "

Read Chomsky wrote on Aug 20, 2008 11:00 AM:

" Jimmy your opinions are tired and predictable. If one were to invoke a simple logical principle such as universality, it would be obvious that considering Middle East peace the two largest and (historically) most agressive military forces are the United States and Israel. This is not a blanket arguement absolving the opposing sides from responsibility, but you can understand Iran's desire for nuclear arms when you take into account the one major thing that keeps the U.S. from invading certain opposing states (i.e. North Korea) and imposing its universal hegemony: nuclear arms. "

It hasn't invaded Lebanon twice like Israel did; it did not launch an attack on Iraq's nuclear facility like Israel did. It has not lead the league in international terrorism as the US has done since the end of WWII. Jimmy, ever figure that Iran might want nuclear missiles for the same reason Poland does-namely for deterrent to Israel and the US? "
