Don’t let McCain minions push press around; Palin gives sarcastic speech

.
The louder Republicans protest, the more they confirm the fact that John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin was a mistake. And despite a professionally delivered, but highly negative, sarcastic and nasty speech last night, the American people have a right to know everything -- absolutely everything -- about her. The media should not let the McCain forces bully it into holding back on its vetting of Palin or its questioning of her record in the face of the campaign’s faux complaints of sexism and personal privacy.

The Republicans, who it is reported blocked McCain’s attempt to put a pro-choice person on the ticket (so much for the ridiculous “maverick” label), can’t bluster their way out of this one with dubious proclamations about Palin’s record and experience, as a clearly one-drink-too-many Newt Gingrich did during a floor interview with MSNBC’s Ron Allen. One supporter actually asserted that Palin has kept us safe from the Russians, which I assume is a claim based on the simple fact that there has been no invasion of Alaska under her watch. “Obama never had to create or administer a state budget,” Palin defenders say. Well, neither has McCain, or any other politician who’s not been a governor. To hear these folks tell it, Palin’s got more experience than even McCain!

The press should dig deep and dig hard so Americans can find out just who they’re being asked to vote for in Palin. And why does she keep saying, as she did last night, that she was against the bridge to nowhere? It’s the second time she’s made that claim, and the record shows she was a supporter of the infamous pork project. In fact, Alaskan residents receive more money per person in earmarks than any other state in the nation.

The press should not be bullied into backing off on examining Palin’s record, as Time magazine reports tonight the McCain forces have clumsily attempted to suppress. If a hardball vetting was good enough for Obama and Hillary Clinton, it should be good enough for Palin, especially in view of her nasty, highly sarcastic big speech, a speech loaded with derision and condescending personal attacks.

No one on the McCain side should cry foul when Obama, Joe Biden and the Democrats fire back now that Palin has opened the door herself by insulting them so directly.

PROMINENT REPUBLICANS CAUGHT OFF CAMERA DISSING McCAIN’S CHOICE OF PALIN

When someone as ultra conservative as former Ronald Reagan speechwriter and current Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan says that with the selection of Palin the race “is over,” you’ve got to take note. But that’s not all Noonan and former Republican advisor to McCain (and current Time columnist) Mike Murphy had to say. I can’t quote Noonan, but you can hear them for yourself through the link below.

" I admit I have not seen the mini'ed Sarah but perhaps the most attractive woman 'in politics' was/is still Jackie Kennedy but then she didn't like it very much. Palin as 'hot' is comparative and in a world of NOT Hollywood I understand. I however in all my life have never as far as I know EVER been considered 'hot' in any way -- except as a Jimmy commenter and erstwhile Trib letter writer and my 'hotness' was usually NOT meant to be complimentary. Palin helps the Mac tick because she gives him his only pazzazz. (Cindy however is sort of Stepford wifeing through it all so she's the one I feel 'sorry' for...) "

" From MSNBC I found this 'post convention map' -- while of course McPain has its nation wide point spread of 'five,' the NBC 'map' has listed these states for O 'n' Joe (all pretty 'solid' I'd say): California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, with Iowa, Minnesota and Pennsylvania 'leaning' O. So 190 electorals + 38 for 228 at most. Mac has 136 'likely' plus 64 leaning (200); 110 'toss ups' and the candydandydate needs 270 of course to win. Wouldn't it be ironic if a la 'W' in 2000 the Big O won with electorals but not in popular votes? Would the righties commenting here EVER 'get over it'? I doubt it... "

" You obviously have not seen her in a mini-skirt. She is totally hot. Interesting to note that Sarah is being kept away from the media; she's up there in her fortress of solitude no doubt studying up on the issues. Again, the salient point here is that McCain did practically no real investigation of this woman prior to picking her. Just ask the political folks up in Alaska if any of McCain's people called them about her. Now that's sheer stupidity which ought to disqualify him in the minds of rational voters. "

That said: sure she's uh 'excited' the righties; they may even begin to uh pray that McCain gets 'called' to the Great Beyond soon after Jan 20 hmm; and in the meantime Mac's got a 'bounce' out of convention of about five points on Obama and more importantly, ten among 'likely voters.' Whether Sarah 'holds up' under scrutiny etc., remains to be seen but as has been observed she's acquired voila! 'celebrity'! She ain't Paris or Brittany either but she IS the new People/US/tabloid mag cause 'celebre'... "

Lee Bowers wrote on Sep 8, 2008 9:42 AM:

If McCain dies in office, a Palin presidency would be most interesting. I mean can't you just see her sashaying with world leaders all dolled up in cute outfits. No drab pantsuits for this gal. Man, it's like a Jackie Collins novel come to life. "

" Democrats are sweating because Palin has ignited a grassroots grassfire that's burned a hole right through the liberal 'womens rights' talking points. The light from the Palin torch is exposing the media's sexism and coziness with Obama.

The NY Times says that Obama dispatches women to attack Palin. Imagine if McCain said that he dispatched blacks to attack Obama? Obama and the press don't even recognize their sexism, but women sure do. All the polls are already showing that McCain-Palin have pulled even or ahead nationally. "

You'd think you were back parsing Harsch's every word which is your most favorite activity on the Jim blog -- no Harsch, no fun. Obama talks in circles. He's a perfect political speaker cause he talks alot, and it takes you awhile to realize that he really didn't address the root of the question. I don't doubt that Obama has a high IQ, but that doesn't make him the best person for the job. I've worked with brilliant people who were out of touch with how the real world works. " Also on tape is Mayor Sarah plumping for good ol' boy US Rep Don Young, the bearer of bridges to Ketchikan (or 'catch me if you can' eh), praising him as one who REALLY is Olympian -- i. e. he brings home THE GOLD! So I was onto something yesterday with that comparison re: the Preston Sturges 'classic' film 'The Great McGinty' but I didn't realize just how close I'd come. I'm convinced now that Sarah Barracuda the basketball champ is a 'ringer' so to speak; i. e. the Alaskan GOPper 'good ol' boys' NEEDED a 'reform' candidate who would of course do (as per McCain) some minor 'reforming' but only enough to shine the buttoms on the tarnished Grand Old Alaska partyers. Yup -- she's fascinating! And as Ronnie the R used to say -- Stay tuned!... "

Why wouldn't you state something like this - The press should dig deep and dig hard so Americans can find out just who theyre being asked to vote for in Barry Obama. Many have no idea his real name and the fact he changed it when he decided to run for office. There is no limit of information that could be dug up about any of these candidates. Americans don't know who they are voting for in Obama. It's a complete mystery. "

Now on average, in that oily far northern welfare state of the big dipper, folks get the equivalent of 500 buckaroos per 'independent' Alaskan in earmarked honest graft -- that's fully TEN TIMES THE REST OF THE COUNTRY; can you dig it? Now here's the kicker -- Palin grafted er obtained ONE THOUSAND BUCKS PER WASILLAN -- that's TWENTY+ TIMES MORE than for poor ol' Wis, one of the least grafty states in the nation. YOUR TAX DOLLARS at work -- FOR SARAH already cats 'n' hats! CAN YOU DIG IT?!... "

" I heard a part of Palin's speech; it was B+ for the serve up Obama as lunch starved Repubs and most interesting was the family introductions -- Track (named for the sport I understand!) looked decidedly uncomfortable but for a sideways mouth thing he did that indicated a welcome touch of cynicism. The daughters remained seated -- five month Bristol wearing something old fashionedy voluminous -- until the youngest, Piper, seemed to say Ain't we supposed ta stand up? and then they did, barely. Todd wore a Beckhamish unshaved look but was smiley with the baby Trig ('strong' in Norski) totally conked out -- bored of the rings already? Todd, we were informed, is a 'champeen' snowmobile racer; he smiled again but wanly -- murmuring to himself 'Way up north -- goin' north to --'?... "

First passionately declaring that teen pregnancy is the family's business and only their business, nothing to get exercised about, and the second clip disparaging the parents of a pregnant Spears girl. The press should be hounding McCain on every single betraed position and should look very closely at the trooper firing in Alaska, among many other things. "

" "Don't let McCains minions push the press around"? Of course the press should be pushed around if necessary. Obama stated emphatically a candidates family is off limits(which I commend him for). But how is this for liberal bias...some talking heads were on last night and someone blasted Sean Hannity(I know, not a favorite of yours, Jimmy)just because he asked about Michelle Obama(while on the campaign trail and addressing the people)saying the US is an evil nation in 2008. To me, even though she is family, this is directly relevant to the campaign as they were on the campaign trail. Well, the liberal commentators were all in an uproar and all aghast that Hannity would bring this up, and kept saying "lets stick to the issues". They then went on to discuss Palins daughters pregnancy, which had 0 relevance. Of course the press needs to be held accountable. "

" The press has been pushed around a long time, so if nothing changes it would not be surprising. I just watched a clip played by Jon Stewart of Karl Rove praising Palin for having been mayor of the second largest city in Alaska (sic, sick, sickening) followed by a clip of Rove disparaging Kaine, mayor of Richmond, Virginia, 'only' the 105th biggest city in the country. The mainstream press should be doing this job, but it falls to Stewart because a very rare few will call a liar a liar, a hypocrite a hypocrite, a criminal a criminal. "

" FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries. "

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families. "

" PALIN: "...it's easy to forget that this is a man (Obama) who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform not even in the state senate."

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation. "

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere." The speech was absolutely incredible. She said what needed to be said and she said it in a fantasic way. Wow! By the way, how about the sexism from the liberal commentators in calling her "shrill"? How often is that word used to describe a male candidate? "
