ABC is not nearly enough: time for Palin to stop hiding and meet the press

.
What do Richard Nixon, Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, William E. Miller, Edmund Muskie, Spiro Agnew, Gerald Ford, Nelson Rockefeller, Thomas Eagleton, Sergeant Shriver, Fritz Mondale, Geraldine Ferraro, George Herbert Walker Bush, Dan Quayle, Al Gore, Jack Kemp, Joe Lieberman, Dick Cheney, John Edwards and Joe Biden have in common? They all made themselves available to the press fully and completely immediately after being selected as a candidate for the Vice Presidency of the United States. There were no delays, no stall tactics, no smoke screens, even though each of these people knew it would be rough and tumble, at times ugly and unfair (and also useful), but a necessary process by which the American public can see and hear for themselves how a future president responds and reacts in unfiltered question and answer sessions.

But not Sarah Palin. An entire week has gone by and all we’ve gotten is a slow-pitch interview with Charlie Gibson, and even at that his softball lobs were enough to reveal Palin didn’t know what Gibson meant by the “Bush Doctrine” and wouldn’t have any qualms about sending Americans into war with Russia if, as NATO members, the former Soviet Union invaded Georgia or Ukraine. Are readers ready to go to war with Russia over Georgia?

If Palin can’t even handle the media, displays of sexism and personal and policy assaults, how on earth is she going to withstand the pressures of the highest office in the land? Just read the pages of this blog and you’ll will find all manner of nasty, vicious things said about Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain. They handled it. Why can’t Sarah Palin?

My goodness, upon the first Bush naming him as his running mate, Indiana Senator Dan Quayle was severely ridiculed in many quarters, but that didn’t stop him from holding a full blown news conference the very next day! And he continued to be ridiculed and trashed throughout the campaign, but he was never sequestered from the media as a part of some sort of election strategy.

The American public needs to know, has a right to know, where Palin stands on a great many things, and they need to hear it straight from her -- not through prepared speeches crafted by political operatives.

They need to know where Palin stands in detail. Does she believe in Creationism? Does she believe it should be taught in public schools? Will she push for the teaching of religion in public schools? Why did she keep making the “bridge to nowhere” and “I sold it on Ebay” claims when news agencies had already reported that neither is true? Does she believe there were dinosaurs on the planet 4000 years ago? Why didn’t she quit her church where her pastor routinely asserted that suicide bombings are G-d’s way of taking judgment on the Jews because they do not believe in Jesus Christ? Would she favor a theocracy? Does she believe Jews need to be perfected? Why does she believe global climate change is not created by man? How does she feel about equal work for equal pay? Is she going to change her stance on abortion to the position held by McCain?

Palin must demonstrate she has the guts and the gravitas to be president. Knowing as little as we do about someone who could be president because we have not been given the opportunity to judge a candidate’s ongoing performance under the glare of the spotlight is a dangerous precedent the public should not tolerate or accept.

It only serves to perpetuate more(but not nearly as horrific) racism. The racists who support affirmative action are not nearly as rotten as the white redneck racists of our nations history. Fair enough? "

" I did not call you a moron, you pinhead--I categroized your thought as moronic. Equating in this context does not mean stating they are equal; it's just putting them in the same, say, ballpark, which is indeed moronic. And all this garbage about affirmative action is truly dumb, you bad person, because it is much more than what it is treated as here. The only real problem with 'aa' is when it involves quotas, thus virtually ensuring that white folk will occasionally get screwed out of a job. Otherwise, 'aa' is a reasonable attempt to right centuries of wrong in a relatively short time. It won't work, but it helps--a great many blacks have received higher education than otherwise would have, for example. "

They should attempt to ensure that no one is discriminated against simply due to the color of their skin. Instead, with affirmative action, they do the opposite. They not only condone racism-they make it the law. That is just plain stupid. Two wrongs dont make a right. The same logic would apply if, for instance, I hit my brother when we were little. Therefore, his kid should be able to hit my kid a generation later. Stupid, right? Well, that is the logic behind affirmative action. More racism is simply never the answer. How naive can YOU get? "

They indeed support racism-which makes them racists. "

Regarding that discussion, coincidentally and oddly enough, it seemed BGS was the offending party in the discussion previously. Louie B. Mayer, head of MGM and 'a very fierce lion indeed' re: the familiar MGM logo, was a great friend of Herbert Hoover and devastated by his hero's ignominious defeat in 1932 to that 'Jew Roosevelt' (FDR was Dutch Reformed church of course!) and the 'Jew Deal' as some crazed hyperventilated righties characterized it. Mayer, Joe Schrenk, William Fox, Harry Cohn (all Hollywood honchos and Jews) and others actually launched a vast and mendacious propaganda campaign AGAINST the socialist Upton Sinclair running for gov as a Democrat in 1934... Your interest in me personally is a little on the obsessive side, as it is with your interest in BGS, and I would like to add that I have rarely seen a post of yours that contributed anything of any import to any discussion. On the other end, look what happened to Bill Watts, Dusty Rhodes, etc. They had tons of experience and ran their respective promotions into the ground. Granted, running a country is harder than running a wrestling promotion, but you get my point. "

They've thought of that: use zircon instead of galena, and do an isotopic analyis to isolate radiogenic lead from the 'original' natural lead; the 'natural radioactive series' gives you a way to get the original Pb concentration (in most samples, lead-204 will get you the original amounts of lead-206 and lead-207). That also lets you know if lead was introduced or lost over time--anything that brings in or takes out Pb over time would have no preference as to isotope--thus, any change from the lead-206 and lead-207 concentrations relative to lead-204 are from radioactive decay).

Chemists and geologists are clever; they know how to pick decent rock samples.

Other parent-daughter element combinations are even more reliable (Rubidium-87 to Strontium-87, samarium-neodymium are used to date both earth and moon rocks). "

Uranium decays slowly into lead inside rocks. The uranium and lead inside these rocks is not very soluble, not even in acid, so even wet rocks don't lose these elements over time in appreciable amounts (look up solubility product constants). Uranium decays at a known rate that does not change over time (check out the rate constants). Use quantitative chemical analysis to find the ratio of uranium to lead to get the age of the rock (using an ordinary differential equation, see ODEs). Unlike carbon-14 dating, this method is almost foolproof: many rocks on earth really are billions of years old. "

Of course a president has in the past sometimes extended the boundaries of what is 'acceptable' -- e. g., Jack Kennedy and ironically his supposed 'nemesis' Richard Nixon and both were decidedly 'punished' for trangressing. A 'President Palin' would need a lot of help of course, but then probably no more than President W did I'd say. Still I'd rather hear that whiney drawl again than her piercing horn blow. No one would ever get raises because hiring managers would know that any newbie starting out will have to be paid the same as the 20 year veteran. If any company these days paid a woman less BECAUSE she is a woman, they would be all over the news and people would be picketing outside their doors everyday all day. Sometimes a company may pay a man or woman less because he or she doesn't have as much time in as his or her counterpart. This is standard practice, and likely will remain so. "

I did the "same job" 9 years ago when I entered the company, and I didn't make then what I do now. According to your standards, equal pay for equal work is an issue for men also, due to the "experience" factor. That is just how things are. It has nothing to do with sex. It has to do with experience. Having said that, it is very possible women as a whole have less experience than men as a whole in the workforce. "
