What do Richard Nixon, Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., Lyndon Johnson, Hubert Humphrey, William E. Miller, Edmund Muskie, Spiro Agnew, Gerald Ford, Nelson Rockefeller, Thomas Eagleton, Sergeant Shriver, Fritz Mondale, Geraldine Ferraro, George Herbert Walker Bush, Dan Quayle, Al Gore, Jack Kemp, Joe Lieberman, Dick Cheney, John Edwards and Joe Biden have in common? They all made themselves available to the press fully and completely immediately after being selected as a candidate for the Vice Presidency of the United States. There were no delays, no stall tactics, no smoke screens, even though each of these people knew it would be rough and tumble, at times ugly and unfair (and also useful), but a necessary process by which the American public can see and hear for themselves how a future president responds and reacts in unfiltered question and answer sessions.
But not Sarah Palin. An entire week has gone by and all we’ve gotten is a slow-pitch interview with Charlie Gibson, and even at that his softball lobs were enough to reveal Palin didn’t know what Gibson meant by the “Bush Doctrine” and wouldn’t have any qualms about sending Americans into war with Russia if, as NATO members, the former Soviet Union invaded Georgia or Ukraine. Are readers ready to go to war with Russia over Georgia?
If Palin can’t even handle the media, displays of sexism and personal and policy assaults, how on earth is she going to withstand the pressures of the highest office in the land? Just read the pages of this blog and you’ll will find all manner of nasty, vicious things said about Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain. They handled it. Why can’t Sarah Palin?
My goodness, upon the first Bush naming him as his running mate, Indiana Senator Dan Quayle was severely ridiculed in many quarters, but that didn’t stop him from holding a full blown news conference the very next day! And he continued to be ridiculed and trashed throughout the campaign, but he was never sequestered from the media as a part of some sort of election strategy.
The American public needs to know, has a right to know, where Palin stands on a great many things, and they need to hear it straight from her -- not through prepared speeches crafted by political operatives.
They need to know where Palin stands in detail. Does she believe in Creationism? Does she believe it should be taught in public schools? Will she push for the teaching of religion in public schools? Why did she keep making the “bridge to nowhere” and “I sold it on Ebay” claims when news agencies had already reported that neither is true? Does she believe there were dinosaurs on the planet 4000 years ago? Why didn’t she quit her church where her pastor routinely asserted that suicide bombings are G-d’s way of taking judgment on the Jews because they do not believe in Jesus Christ? Would she favor a theocracy? Does she believe Jews need to be perfected? Why does she believe global climate change is not created by man? How does she feel about equal work for equal pay? Is she going to change her stance on abortion to the position held by McCain?
Palin must demonstrate she has the guts and the gravitas to be president. Knowing as little as we do about someone who could be president because we have not been given the opportunity to judge a candidate’s ongoing performance under the glare of the spotlight is a dangerous precedent the public should not tolerate or accept.
