City throwing dog owners a bone

.
Oct. 16, 2008 — The city is considering a location for a second leash-free dog park in La Crosse. Parks and Recreation Director Steve Carlyon is eyeing about 15 acres off Cunningham Street on the North Side.

It would likely cost about $40,000 to fence-in and the land and supply watering and clean-up stations.

But dog owners might have to pay to play. Carlyon is hoping to added an extra couple bucks on the cost of a Humane Society-issued dog tag to generate a park maintenance fund.

Carlyon said a deal with a sponsor may be in the works, though he declined to name the potential donor.

City officials also are proposing changes to where canines are allowed in city parks. If approved, dogs would be permitted only on park sidewalks and walkways with leashes shorter than 6 feet.

" Krusty: I hope you have one LONG nose, because you can't see beyond it: dog licenses pay for multiple protections for you AND your dog. The problem may be that Krusty can barely afford to feed the dog, so he fronts with being to big for such a "worthless" fee. Krusty, part of being a "citizen" is paying your fair share for the services you use and for the priveleges you take. Be an American and a good neighbor Krusty and go get your dog a license: get over yourself already. "

" what's the land used as now?, 15 acres is a good sized parcel. what's the total number of dog 'licenses' in the City? is a 'couple of bucks' 1, 2 or 3 dollars? what happens to the 'tax', (increased 'license'cost), after all costs are recouped? does it just get tossed into the general fund, for the spending on any whim the City may have? a good 'journalist' might ask those questions. "

" I hope Animal Control finds you Krusty! That is b.s. that you won't license your pet. It's against the law. Do the right thing! "

" To Krusty: Owning a dog is not some "god given right' Has your dog had the required shots. A license is the only way to keep nut jobs like you from having their own pet 'attacked' by some other nut jobs mutt with no shots, that refuses to 'pay the tax'. Get some responsibility . If you gotta have a dog poo producer then pay or shut the heck up . My right to not step in your dogs' mess starts when I put my foot down. Your right to own a mutt also starts when you follow the law. "

" I think this is great! The dog park currently in La Crosse is pretty small. It is good for dogs to be socialized with other dogs. I frequent the La Crosse dog park often and I am excited for a larger park. "

" Remember the Mayors plan to have police cadets take over doggie-patrol duties from the Humane Society? The plan got scrapped, but didnt the cost for dog licenses get a big increase anyway? I say, keep your dogs on a leash, clean-up after them, and enjoy our city parks grass-and-all. Show of paws: How many think we should get a new Mayor ? Yep, thats what I thought. OK, paws down. "

" If dog owners follow the rules -- keep their dog on a 6 feet or less leash, and carry plastic bags to pick-up any "calling cards" Max, Maggie, or Molly may leave, there should be no reason dogs and their owners shouldn't be able to enjoy the city parks, together, including that grass! Just enforce the rules. "

" 15 acres is impressive. If the Onalaska dog park is any indication people will pay for the privilege.
Regardless of what happens the people that use the current parks really need to clean up their dogs "acts". I have seen time and time again people that disregard taking care of their dogs business.
And you wonder why the City of La Crosse won't let dogs in their parks. Hello? "

Krusty wrote on Oct 19, 2008 2:01 PM:

" If the city finally got a decent dog park and allowed dogs into city parks like other normal cites I might just have to go out and finally buy a dog license. I refuse to get one now, there's no way I am going to pay another "tax" and receive nothing for it "

" Another Jonsrud plan but wait, theres more? Pay more for less? The city is disallowing you to walk your dog(s) in city parks, meaning, stay off the grass and stay out of Riverside Park? You and your dog(s) will need your own separate park somewhere else, and you will have to pay extra for this exclusion. So, if we've got this straight, you can still walk your dog on city sidewalks, even if the sidewalk is within or around city parks, but dont even think about you and your dog(s), together, strolling on that grass?

Just another example of segregation, Johnsrud style, at taxpayers expense. "
