Weekend TV, and some other odds and ends to end another odd week

.
As if the continued Wall Street rollercoaster and marathon election weren’t enough to label this past week as another odd one, now we discover that John McCain’s “Joe the plumber” isn’t actually a licensed plumber after all. Nor is Joe someone who makes more than the $250,000 a year, which means he would qualify for the tax break Barack Obama says he’ll deliver to those who make less than a quarter of a million dollars a year. Go figure.

SOME INTERESTING TV THIS WEEKEND

On PBS tonight “POV” looks at four U.S. soldiers -- two who completed a full tour of duty in Iraq but claimed conscientious objector status when called a second time, and two who are currently serving their second tours in the battle zone. It runs at 9:00 P.M. CST.

“The Secrets of Body Language” looks like it could be interesting, especially in view of the presidential debates where so much has been made of the candidates’ contrasting styles and manner. The program airs at 9:00 P.M. CST on the History Channel.

Turner Classic Movies is showing two one-of-a-kind masterpieces in keeping with the crazy and dangerous times in which we live. At 7:00 P.M. CST tonight it broadcasts the seminal terrorist-espionage classic, “The Day of the Jackal,” and at 12:30 P.M. on Saturday it runs the blackest of all satires, “Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” Sadly, in some respects, this seminal classic is more relevant than ever.

ODDS and ENDS

Director Ridley Scott’s much-lauded “Gladiator” purports to tell the story of Marcus Aurelius. The Times of London reports that archeologists in Italy have discovered his tomb.

Researchers are again reporting that many people who suffer from obesity do so because they receive less satisfaction from eating, a paradox if ever there was one.

And if I complained to it to my parents, I would have been horsewhipped again. "

I broke my cell phone, too. Feel better now? "

I altered the course of the class to a discussion of the merits and demerits of his attitude, for the boy is smart, funny and needs to be taken seriously. Yet I would lock people in cages to change their mind. This from someone, who like almost all others on this blog, has never offered an insightful response to anything I have written. "

Some posters here are pretty frightening. But, maybe I wouldnt need to worry as Harsch mentioned that he and his students were all homeless anyway(which would indicate a lack of a dark, dank basement with a small cage). "

Oh, I also pay the full amount, even if I am billed less for some reason. But, I guess that is a minor point to the Obama supporters. "

" Obama I see just plumped Gen Powell as a potential 'advisor' -- just as are already Paul Volcker, Warren Buffett and Richard Luger eh. The assertion below that O is a quasi, proto, crypto 'socialist' who will seize your SUV (if it isn't already up on blocks), your pistolo AND your latest direct deposit in order to 'spread it' is taking his campaign rhetoric not so much too seriously as into the ancient FDRoosevelt is a Red! fantastics of seventy some years ago. There's a story; I'll tell it again: once on ABC's very fine 1960s tv series 'FDR' a REAL socialist, Norman Thomas, was interviewed. 'Did R carry out a socialist program?' he was asked. Yeah NT riposted -- he carried it out on a stretcher. Obama is now the 'CAPITALIST' savior, not the soshies'... "

McCain's next observation -- See ya in hell Joe -- but remember: we live up NOW! Actually I think the religious righties NEED me; they require someone to pound when Harsch and BGS go missing and ESPECIALLY as McCain spins down the drain. What irritates me -- makes me the 'cantankerous old fart' -- is that SO MUCH of the anti-Obama and pro-Jawn Palin is trivialized, one dimensional and silly -- with exceptions. And say if you don't 'like' my comments -- well fair enough: I (usually) DON'T like yours. We'll just go on this way I assume and let Jimmy do his job re: any needed 'referee' stuff. Typical democrats and ultra-liberals cannot sacrifice unless 'all' others are made to sacrifice as well. At the very least, we need to elect McCain to keep the goverment 'fair and balanced'. Isn't that a crying point of the liberal media? Shouldn't it work for goverment too? The problem with the last 8 years is that it wasn't successfuly citizen neutral.....too many intellecuuuaaals trying to run our lives....that's my guess. He did not force him to leave them behind, he did not take them at a point of a gun, in fact he let the rich man keep his possessions and then turned and walked away with a heavy heart. Obama on the other hand has arbitrarily drawn a line of wealth which is not so distinct right now. If Obama were more like Jesus he would put a box on the tax return and ask all the rich democrats & 'ultra' liberals to pay the alternative super high tax. "

By the way Rick I DID write the 'I hate you' referred to by our old ol' bud 'Cf' AS A JOKE, as an acknowledgement of the usual dynamic here, and OF COURSE it was taken (or 'presented') as a LITERAL statement which oughtn't be surprising eh. I'm not sure if I've ever seen such a pathetically run campaign. And all this time I don't think Bush and Cheney have lifted a finger to help, have they? 'Okay -- sell EVERYTHING you have Joe, SPREAD your wealth by giving it to the poor and then FOLLOW ME and live as I live, day to day, praising God and teaching His ways.' " I wonder re: Jesus' stories about 'wealth' if McCain, a VERY RICH man indeed via his wife, might be reminded of the parable of the stores in which the rich man (let's call him 'Joe' eh) has stored up a great harvest in his barns and then lies down to sleep that night so self satisfied -- 'Now I'm RICH!' thinks Joe 'I've got it made; all that hard work and I'm finally on "Easy street"!' Suddenly a flash of light and an angel appears -- 'Joe YOU FOOL! Don't you know that this night YOUR LIFE is required of you?!' Jesus always said NOT to rely on the goods holed up in barns, bank accounts, plumbing supply and 401Ks but on those 'stored up in the kingdom of God.' Hmmm... "

I don't expect a total rejection of W's imperial policies and attempts to control access to middle eastern oil reserves because that is impossible for any president from the 'major parties' but Obama will be far more 'judicious' I think; some -- like David Brooks -- worry that he will be TOO circumspect, even 'passive' but I doubt that. He will be what is called 'deliberative.' He'll have very capable advisors -- Volcker, Buffett, Richard Luger for sec'y of state? -- and he will be a 'steady' personable hand at the proverbial till. " Part of the 'strain' on the Jim blog is that Obama is clearly gaining and McCain clearly losing political strength. Obama is campaigning in 'red states' (how did Repubs get to be 'RED' -- as a soshie I claim 'red' but it's been 'stolen' from me!) while Mac is merely trying to 'hold the line.' McCain plumps 'create wealth' over 'spread the wealth' but Wall Street and investment banks created a GREAT DEAL of wealth recently; however it was quite concentrated as usual. 'Joe the plumber' is NOT as 'rich' as JMcC contends (Joe OWES state taxes and has a lien on his home) so at some point Joe might really NEED that Obama tax cut. If 'greed is good' is Mac's new mantra, superseding his Teddy Rooseveltian collective 'Country first,' then the Repub minions may 'buy' but I don't think the rest of the nation is impressed... "

Of course, we all know they have their extremist loons on a par with the evangelicals here, but mixing with the right crowd--working folk, too--for four days I was immune from the religious silliness. By the way, the extra cost for Obama (for those of us actually willing to look up the numbers - real tough) is almost entirely due to a higher police cost. " Wake up! The city decides what to bill the candidates-but the candidates decide what to pay. Any bets on whether good ol' Barack has reimbursed the taxpayers ANYTHING yet? If he was as concerned about the taxpayers as he claims, he would cover all of his expenses, not just what the city billed him. Oh, your math doesnt work. McCain had the additional rental expense, and STILL had lower costs than Barack Obama, and left less unpaid(McCain stuck the city for 13K, Obama stuck the city for 28K). Of course, I know I will just be dismissed by Welch and others as an "Obama-hater" for pointing this out. "

" Welch, you should wear shovels strapped to your body as you always have to get your digs in. Just couldn't resist, huh? Anti-intellectual? YOU are the one who refuses to engage in rational dialogue the last several days. "

Michael Welch Cheering The GERMANS... wrote on Oct 17, 2008 11:32 AM:

" I never especially enjoyed 'Gladiator' but for the initial scene wherein the Germans attack the invading Roman legions -- I found this the FIRST time I ever rooted for GERMANS in a movie! A better picture about Marcus Aurelius is probably Samuel Bronstein's huge production 'The Fall of the Roman Empire' (it finally broke the great independent who also produced 'King of Kings' and 'El Cid') although Alec Guinness as the philosopher-emperor dies in the first hour and the rest of the movie then becomes rather tedious but for Christopher Plummer's semi-nutsy performance as 'Commodius,' Aurelius' anti-intellectual 'cagefighter' son who screws everything up... Michael Welch One Fans Tribute To Ol Slim... wrote on Oct 17, 2008 11:24 AM:

" One of my great fave film actors is 'Ol' Slim' aka Slim Pickens, born in the San Fernando valley yet he sounds strictly off the ranch on some Tex-Okla prairie. He was a bronco rider on the rodeo circuit in the 1930s and '40s who became a rodeo clown, a very skilled performer who not only entertains but distracts angry bulls and horses from thrown riders; it's a brave and dangerous occupation. Pickens once remarked that before he played 'Major Kong' in 'Strangelove' his 'name' on movie sets was Hey You; afterward he became 'Mr Pickens' and his dressing rooms got larger along with the checks. In Spielberg's WOEFULLY underrated satire-farce '1941' Ol' Slim punctuates his trademark colorful lingo with 'Jeezus Palomina!' a great 'Slimism' and a unique expletive indeed... "

" Are you really that dumb? The city is the one who decides what to bill the candidates. If McCain would have had his rally outside he would have avoided the higher rental fees for the hall. The difference in room rental fees is about $11,000. DUUUUUHHHHHHH. "

" The FCC just released a draft order on October 14 that will dramatically affect telecommunications investment, jobs and economic development in Wisconsin and other marketsespecially those served by small and mid-sized telecommunications companies. The order requires Wisconsins residential customers-the elderly, single parents and low income users- in smaller markets, to absorb network costs now borne by large telecommunications providers. The companies that benefit the most from this will be two Fortune 100 companies that are the largest, well-financed, integrated carriers in the world. Wisconsin residents could see monthly telephone and broadband rate increases ranging from $2 to $18. This, during a time when our economy is at its worse, will cause people to either drop phone service that provides 911 and broadband accessibility, or struggle to pay for a service they cannot do without. We must get our elected officials to vote Against the FCC intercarrier compensation order. "

" Re Obamas tax break: I would like an apology from all those who blasted me on the previous blog when I criticized Obama for bilking the taxpayers of LaCrosse. Well, the figures are now out: While McCain cant be totally excused, he did pay for well over half of his bill($15,000 out of $28,000). B. Hussein Obama only paid about, ohhhhhhhh, 1/7 of his cost($5300 out of $33,300). Neither candidate is perfect, but who seems more concerned about not screwing over the taxpayers? "
