The good news is none of these corporations are likely to ask for any taxpayer bailout money. The bad news is there’s a new report out revealing how hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and fries make it from the farm to the counters of three of the nation’s top fast-food chains, McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy’s. (If nothing else this depressing article proves Forbes Magazine isn’t just a journalistic shill for big business.)

The study’s co-authors, A. Hope Jahren and Rebecca Kraft, used a technique that identifies carbon and nitrogen isotopes in meat to determine the diet of the animal it came from and in what conditions it was raised. The researchers concluded that, based on the high levels of carbon and nitrogen isotopes found in the meat products, the animals were mostly fed corn in order to make them as fat as possible in as short a time as possible. Jahren and Kraft also said the data is consistent with that found in animals raised in conditions of extreme confinement.

Our beloved fries weren’t left off the hook, either. The article says “samples of french fries revealed that the restaurant chains are using one frying oil or a combination of oils despite claims stating otherwise,” and that there is the predominance of what they term a “corn oil protocol.” And we know that the overuse of corn is not helping our economy or our health.

O.K. That’s bad enough. But the really bad news is the authors’ “suggestion that the nitrogen isotope signatures for certain meat products were consistent with such environments where animals had consumed their own waste.” True or not, it’s a disgusting thought.

I told you it might be better to skip this one.

" 'Cagefighter' are YOU 'Johnny-Tess'? (Don't lie!) How long have you followed Jimmy's blog? (Don't lie!) You mean you KNOW NOTHING of that 'history'; you recall NOTHING of his accusing Jimmy again and again of blocking comments that WERE NEVER SUBMITTED? 'Johnny-Tess' even went into an incomprehensible snit over the late American nazi leader George Lincoln Rockwell being the 'brother,' then the 'nephew,' of the popular artist 'Norman Rockwell.' (I proved that was NOT true.) WHAT was THAT about other than anti-Jewish (specifically anti-Jimmy) harassment? I can't make a stone like you THINK 'Cf'; you excuse EVERYTHING for YOUR political purposes but I WILL NOT say your naked 'emperor' has clothes just to PLEASE your or anyone else's false sense of 'fairness'... "

Cagefighter wrote on Nov 14, 2008 2:07 PM:

" Michael, I am not understanding your accusations about posters here lying for political purposes. That makes no sense. Why would one lie on an anonymous message board? To what purpose? The left seems to throw that out when they have no other answer. But its bunk. You can disagree with a persons opinions or logic, but to accuse them of lying about what they believe is a little silly. "

" I also have yet to figure out just what sort of 'integrity' ol' 'Nest' has so the gulch is dry indeed. Is he implying HE's been censored? What other moanings has he to pitch? No Jimmy diatribes against Mark Johnsrud? No further explorations as to the 'mysterious' popularity of Jewish senators? TIF districts unaddressed? 'Johnny-Tess' LIED about his comments being aced -- they were LIES specifically meant to needle Jimmy and imply untruths about him and yes he got to do that but finally Jimmy called him on his LIES and in that gunfight pod'ner 'J-T' turned tail. So MANY self-proclaimed 'Christian' believers here who LIE for political purpose -- not very edifying... "

" New report, old news. The nation's food supply is based on corn and confined animal feeding operations. It took a two year study to figure this out? "

Nestor wrote on Nov 13, 2008 2:31 PM:

" This is Nestor, this time, before, and in the future. "integrity"? Seems like a funny word to be used by a 'dry gulcher' and his pal 'Jimmy'. "'Johnny-Tess' used to moan that his most scintillating and unanswerable comments were denied so that he just couldn't 'win'"? At least he got to voice his displeasure. "

Michael Welch Be Yourself And Quit Lying... wrote on Nov 13, 2008 11:07 AM:

" I don't understand this recurring barrage -- it started with the poisonous 'Johnny-Tess' beast and continues through this 'Cagefighter' and ol' 'Nestor' the 'misunderstood' -- that comments are being 'censored' for political content. I have long realized that anonymity permits multiple commentaries without identification -- nobody KNOWS who these folks are; 'Cagefighter' could be 'Nestor' or 'H' or anyone as far as the rest of us know. 'Johnny-Tess' used to moan that his most scintillating and unanswerable comments were denied so that he just couldn't 'win'; he went on and on with that dishonest ploy. Faking other characters is NOT something I approve of though it's oft done as satire. That's why I NEVER do that and never will. One man/woman, one vote; one man/woman here, one 'voice' -- seems integral to any REAL integrity on this blog... "

Michael Welch Socialism At YOUR Service SIR... wrote on Nov 13, 2008 10:23 AM:

" 'You are what you eat' is not I would suppose a very flattering assumption for Americans; however profit and greed ever overcome self image as the 'current crisis' (just the CURRENT one!) proves. 'Socialism,' which is only a word (mainly a pejorative: see the last least learned and lamented Mac campaign), would have to involve a new attitude of PUBLIC responsibility and not 'responsibility' solely to the uh evidently poorly regulated and hugely indulged. That's why what I name as 'socialism for the rich' is an IRONIC phrase because it's not in fact 'socialism' at all but merely government AT THE SERVICE OF THE WEALTHIEST -- and those commenting here who say they are Randists and Joe Plumberites would call those richest 'the worthiest' among 'US,' no doubt... "

Cagefighter wrote on Nov 13, 2008 9:33 AM:

" If I or someone else sees something funny, a weird comment, or something addressing someone we work with, we will regularly say "hey, come over here. Look at this. Do you want to reply to this clown?" (or something to that effect). Jimmy, I certainly dont mind you inquiring about this, but in fairness you should post my responses to you.... "

" This is a tricky arena for policy. Clearly our nation's "cheap food" policy has had an up side with respect to fighting hunger, but the subsidy of high value (calorie) foodstuffs is showing a dark side. Pure bigness--economy of scale--is showing its faultlines. "More" and "Bigger" is evidently not better. Ask Wall St. Ask Agriprocessors (in Postville, IA). Ask General Motors. Ask our obese nation. Now the policy challenge becomes: how DO we favor small, local or regional producers of sustainable products? I'm putting this out as an open thread. . . "

Cagefighter wrote on Nov 13, 2008 8:45 AM:

" The irony displayed by BGS within the very first post is grotesque, as it relates to what we feed our children.
This is disturbing--not so much the corn feeding to fatten the animals, but the other types of abuse(confinement for long periods in small spaces, etc) Nothing so sickening as the recent story about the abuse of those pigs and sows. "

" Jimmy, it's just the tip of the iceberg. The FDA could care less about our health. It's all about assuring maximum profits for corporations. So, when a big shot at FDA is done "regulating", he gets a plush job at a corporation he helped when he/she was in the FDA. "

BrianGSmith wrote on Nov 13, 2008 3:22 AM:

" If you're looking for socialism look no further than King Corn and our Agricultural policies in general. Even though the US is an obese and gluttonous Nation that throws away more food than other Nations consume we still are subsidizing Big Agriculture to the tune of over $10 Billion a year. Corn needs intense fertilizer and pesticide treatments and this further screws up our environment and health. Corn is everywhere in our food chain, unaturally, just look at the ingredients of the krappe you eat and feed your kids. "
