Media should move on, and Bettie dies

.
Chicago politics dirty. Really? Some State of Illinois politicians, too. You’re kidding?

I wrote a few weeks ago about how the major media has been floundering since the end of the primaries and presidential election. The amount of coverage being devoted to corrupt Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich shows that continues to be the case. Of course the charges against Blagojevich are extremely serious. But to listen to the same facts and same quotes and the same scraps of information; to watch the same video clips, the same questions being asked and all the rest for over a week has turned this story into a media created melodrama.

Look, politics is dirty and full of corruption. I couldn’t even begin to list all of the politicians who have been involved in some sort of backroom wheeling and dealing in just the past couple of years. Cover the Blagojevich story, absolutely; keep us up on the latest developments. But to see network newscasts spending as much as a third of the precious little time they have on the same story again and again is not serving the public good, especially as the economy continues to collapse, unemployment inches ever upwards and world challenges await.

POPULAR PAST PINUP DIES

Legendary pinup girl Bettie Page, whose photographs in the nude, in bondage and in provocative postures appeared in men’s magazines and private stashes across America in the 1950s and set the stage for the sexual revolution of the rebellious 1960s, died Thursday in Los Angeles. She was 85.

" Ronnie, you ain't all that bright, as we all know, but you can brush up on your prose a littel nonetheless--see your 8:52 post. The thing is, Ronnie, when you express yourself you have to do it with the understanding that the reader is not half inside your mind (awful thought). You have to think clearly Ronnie, at whatever level, and then express yourself in like terms, including even your private-most conscious thoughts. "

Michael Welch The Problem Is Basic Respect... wrote on Dec 16, 2008 1:03 PM:

" By the way Van Johnson was never in the film 'Van Wilder' which was released in 2002. My dispute with 'El Scheisskopf' has to do with his insulting manner, NOT with his dubious movie tastes. I thought he was asking a 'real' question but it was only an excuse to play 'adolescent' wise guy. And I'd suggest he drop that stupid 'Who are you to doubt --' crap as it's as funny as a crucifix. My responses DO SHOW that if I'm treated with reasonable respect I reply in kind. That's all I ask... "

Ronnie Gossett wrote on Dec 16, 2008 11:39 AM:

" Okay, apparently El Dandy disrespected and insulted Welch by having a different opinion regarding a movie. Well, who are you to doubt the respect of El Dandy? "

Michael Welch You Get What You Ask For Scheisskopf... wrote on Dec 16, 2008 10:34 AM:

" I'll say it 'plainly' -- if someone wants to fart around with me I'm farting back. But IF you want to actually discuss something like an adult instead of some wisearse kid then we'll get along. I say what I really think and I don't find this 'El Scheisskopf' crapola funny; it's insulting mainly. Speak to me with a modicum of respect and you'll get respect in return... "

" Adolescent, not childish. "

Ronnie Gossett wrote on Dec 16, 2008 8:52 AM:

" Someone expressed a differing taste in movies then Welch. Ergo, according to Harsch, Welch is unpopular. Not only that, but the person who has said different taste in movies is, according to Harsch, squandering their intelligence. El Dandy, this is the type of thing you can expect to run into on this blog. "

Jeff to El Dandy wrote on Dec 15, 2008 5:01 PM:

" Lee Bowers attitude towards you unfortunately is the exception, not the rule, on this blog. Welch and Harsch seem to think anyone who disagrees with them lacks intelligence, BGS is just plain nasty to opponents, as a rule. There's more name calling and personal attacks on here than there is honest debate. "

El Dandy wrote on Dec 15, 2008 3:07 PM:

" I was just welcomed by Lee Bowers on todays topic. I commended him for his attitude of civility toward people with opposing views. I am glad I didnt put Michael Welch in that category. Who is Michael Welch to doubt the intelligence of El Dandy? Because I might have different tastes in movies? If Bowers is the exception here and Welch the rule, I may be gone shortly anyway. "El Dandy, we hardly knew ye." "

harsch to welch wrote on Dec 15, 2008 2:59 PM:

" What makes you unpopular is that you convey information without being asked to do so. The reaction you get is what you might deserve is you were sitting on them and forcing them to listen to you. The fact that you are just writing on a blog and getting such a response suggests you are being taunted by very frustrated people, many of whom, I would guess, are on some level very aware--and thus very embarrassed by the fact--that they have squandered their intelligence. "

Michael Welch El Scheisskopf -- Yet Another Silly... wrote on Dec 15, 2008 11:56 AM:

" This new 'addition' (in 'nomme de plume' only I suspect) is yet one more repellently self-named rightie determined to spout nonsense in order to mask his ignorance. Sigh! We endure a lot here on Jimmy's blog so to just ATTEMPT ANY intelligent exchange. 'El Scheisskopf' is MY name for him from now on; obviously he knows little but repeats himself every time AS IF he were overwhelmed with his childish sense of 'clever'... "

El Dandy wrote on Dec 15, 2008 11:33 AM:

Michael Welch Some More About Van Johnson... wrote on Dec 15, 2008 10:39 AM:

" Van Johnson's last appearence on screen was in a 1992 Australian film titled 'Clowning Around.' Johnson was one of the most popular movie actors in Hollywood during the mid to late 1940s and early '50s; he had leading roles in top M-G-M productions such as 'A Guy Named Joe,' 'Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo,' 'Command Decision' and 'The Last Time I Saw Paris.' He also had important parts in Frank Capra's 'State of the Union,' in 'Battleground,' 'The Caine Mutiny' and the musical 'Brigadoon.' By the 1960s his film career lapsed for the most part but he began a successful theater stint that continued into the 1980s. Many of his films such as the ones named above are considered 'classics' today... "

Michael Welch The LIMITS Of Discourse... wrote on Dec 14, 2008 1:21 PM:

" My view of the news media is very much like Chomsky's and especially 'Bowers' in that I think they are correct in saying that generally there is what is characterized as a 'liberal bias' but there's a wily reason for one. The media in essence defines, delineates the LIMITS of ACCEPTED discourse; just as such as Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh provide the 'limits' of rightist expression in major media -- i. e. Ron Paul ONLY if he is a presidential candidate, Pat Buchanan sometimes and NEVER NEVER a David Duke say as a COMMENTATOR. On the left NO Chomsky, no Nader unless HE is running for prez and only occasionally some writer from The Nation. (9-11 conspiratorists of course NEVER NEVER...) "

Reader in South Carolina wrote on Dec 14, 2008 8:12 AM:

" The major media latches onto a story like a dog to a bone. Gnawing on it until nothing is left. Then moving on to the next bone no matter how much meat is on it. I don't understand with all the news that is out there why major media does this. Are they saving money by not doing more investigative reporting and broad range of stories/news? Are they using most of their budget on the attractive news anchors, graphics and background sounds? Do they produce what the majority of viewers demand......ENTERTAINMENT. I sadly believe it is the entertainment reason. This is why getting news from a variety of perspectives is so important in the 21st century. "

Michael Welch Tribute To An All American Actor... wrote on Dec 13, 2008 10:51 AM:

" This blog observes the death of soft core porn queen Bettie Page so I'd also like to do so re: the passing of movie great Van Johnson, yet ANOTHER 'favorite' of mine who was such an attractive winning actor that folks sometimes didn't see how damn good he really was. As 'Ted Lawson' the bomber pilot in 'Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo' he is absolutely believable as he is as the brash cynical political columnist in 'State of the Union,' the tough bemused soldier under surprise attack in 'Battleground' and as the wise guy pal of Gene Kelly in 'Brigadoon.' He was an 'all American boy' type with his red hair and freckles who had a touch of pathos to him, as do all 'all American boys'... "

" WMD's would have been thoroughly investigated and the UN inspectors would have been allowed to continue and the media would have truthfully reported that the UN found NOTHING. War averted. Peace on Earth.

Instead the mass media is an aider and abettor the neo-con war crimes.

This misperception divides the population into two caps....US realists and those in the right wing fantasy land.

RE Left leaning media wrote on Dec 13, 2008 6:27 AM:

" Poppycock and rubbish my friends.

The media is owned by the right wing conservatives. Please, this red herring is repeated ad nauseum to the point that lite weights actually believe it.

If the media was 'liberal' Gore would have been described in the collective media summary as a brilliant genius and not an overexagerating monkey.

Bush's multiple DWI's and his drunken AWOL status during Vietnam would have dominated 2000 news cycles....and we'd have never learned Monica's last name.

This lefty liberal theory is TOTAL BS. Shame on you Jimmy for supporting the preposterous supposition.

BS (with a G in the middle) "

" Not entirely so; just look at the post from a few days ago regarding the latest Nixon tapes. In that piece I refer to both Richard Nixon and George Bush without identifying them as Republicans. I do agree, however, with your implying that the major media leans left, but I have never considered that a bad thing. Thanks for your comments, though, and for reading my blog. "

Michael Welch Obama NOT Beyond Question... wrote on Dec 12, 2008 12:03 PM:

" A friend of mine sends me occasionally pieces from one Alex Jones' Infowars.com site re: Obama 'questions' and such. It's inspired as an 'old time' right wing site, i. e. it's extremely 'conspiratorial' and exchews the usual 'modern' neo-con Bushite view of the world which is that American intervention anywhere is not only justified but ought to happen all the time. Sometimes this rightieness careens into 'Jewish bankers-communist' connnections or alien species eyebrow raisers which makes one of course dismissive. That said the idea that Obama is 'incorruptible' as a CHICAGO pol is naive; I've made the point again and again that the O is more 'typical,' not weird or crypto-radical. And David Axelrod, big Obama honcho, FIRST says Yeah we're discussing with Blago, THEN retracts WHOOPS! when the going gets embarrassing. Hmmm indeed... "

Michael Welch Soft Core Porn and Soft Core Corruption... wrote on Dec 12, 2008 10:21 AM:

" I'm also an admirer of SOFT core porn, lingerie and undies stuff -- Playboy tended in that style while Hustler OY! Most of Hollywood of course works on the 'soft core' principle that it's what you can't quite see or just see that tantalizes most, e. g., Natalie Wood's slow strip in 'Gypsy' and Capucine's split second exposed nipple in 'North to Alaska.' And I never anticipated an Obama administration having 'entertainment value' re: say Nixon's but here's Blagojevich as I say portraying Sturges' 'McGinty' -- I watched it again last night: 'GOVERNOR ARRESTED!' is a headline in the pic. Did Obama 'discuss'? Did his minions deal? Will Blagojevich DEAL now for his own resignation, i. e. he goes if federal charges are dropped? Will Rod bartend in a 'banana republic'? Stay tuned!... "

C Noevil wrote on Dec 12, 2008 10:02 AM:

" Yeah the media should just move on, ignore all the dirt in Illinois politics. We all know that Obama, a former Senator from Illinois, is completely clear of any of the corruptness in Illinois politics. Just because Obama's opponent to the Illinois Senate seat had to withdraw after his 'sealed' divorse records were released to the press, doesn't mean the Obama had any connection to that. Just because Obama got money and housing deals from the convict Rezko, doesn't mean that Obama knew he was crooked. Just because Obama got his political start from close friend Ayers, doesn't mean that Obama knew that he was a unapologitic terrorist. Now, just because Obama met with Blanko in December, doesn't mean that Obama knew that he was crooked. Obama is pure, everyone around him is just crooked. Let's move on, nothing to see here. "
